I’m a princess. But hopefully that’s not news to you. The best part about being a princess? Wearing a crown. Unfortunately, crowns are expensive. HAVE NO FEAR, however, because I’ll show you how to do the next best thing, a braid crown, or headband as it is sometimes called. It’s awesome because it’s super elegant, but it also keeps the hair out of your face(like hello, bangs are cute but they are so annoying sometimes).

Step 1. Part the hair

If you don’t do this correctly, then it’s going to be very challenging to keep a neat braid. When you par the hair, you should start by one of the ears. Take all the hair that is in front of the ear and brush it forward. From there, create a part. Move in a straight line perpendicular to the ear across the top of the scalp. Continue to brush all of the hair forward. Once your part is created, brush the hair in the back of the head and secure it with a hair tie.

keep the part clean and relatively in line with the ears!

Step 2. Begin the braid.

You can do a Dutch or a French braid, it does not matter. For my tutorial I have chosen to do a Dutch braid. Begin by grabbing the hair closest to the ear and braiding.

grab a small section close to the ear

*note: do not pick up all the hair, begin with just a small section.

Step 3. Dutch/French

Pull hair into the braid in a Dutch/French fashion, adding to the braid from the hair part near the front of the head.

Step 4. Crown

Just like a crown goes around the head, so does the braid. Follow the part that you made across the top of the scalp all the way until the other ear.

Step 5. Finishing touches.

Once you’ve run out of hair to pull into your braid, begin to regular braid all the way down the strand. Then, pin it to the bottom of the head, near the nape of the neck with bobby pins. Once it is secure, untie the hair in the back of the head and let it lay over the braid. Taa daaaa! You are now a princess!

let the rest of the hair down to cover where you’ve pinned

Some things to think about:

  1. I know I say it every week, but this isn’t going to be perfect the first few times.
  2. Be sure to begin as close to the ear as possible so your crown wraps all the way along your head.
  3. You don’t necessarily have to pin it under, you can leave the braid out as an accent, too!
  4. Keep it tight! No loose braids!

Best of luck!

Julia
